Cranberry Institute Highlights New Study Showing 20% Reduction in H. pylori Through Daily Cranberry Intake

New Delhi: The India office of The Cranberry Institute is conducting a series of informative, multi-city sessions with leading gastroenterologists, gut health specialists, and endocrinologists to share breakthrough findings on the dosage effect of daily cranberry consumption in suppressing Helicobacter pylori(H. pylori) infection. The sessions, being held across New Delhi, Chennai, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, and Kolkata, aim to raise awareness about a promising complementary dietary strategy in a region with high H. pylori prevalence and elevated gastric cancer risk.

The expert panel features Dr. Jignesh Gandhi, Professor of Surgery and Robotic & Gastrointestinal Surgeon at Gleneagles and Fortis Hospitals, Mumbai; Dr. Amy B. Howell, Ph.D., Associate Research Scientist at Rutgers University, USA; Dr. Vani Vijay, GI Minimal Access & Robotic Surgery Specialist at Apollo Spectra Hospitals and Gleneagles Healthcity, Chennai; and Mr. Sumit Saran, India Representative for The Cranberry Institute. Each session is being moderated by a senior local medical expert.

Speaking on the significance of the findings, Dr. Jignesh Gandhi highlighted that H. pylori infection affects nearly 60% of India’s population. He noted that consuming cranberry juice twice daily for eight weeks demonstrated a 20% reduction in infection rates, offering a natural, well-tolerated complementary strategy alongside conventional treatment. Dr. Amy Howell elaborated on the double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial involving 522 H. pylori-positive adults. She explained that cranberry juice high in proanthocyanidins (44 mg per 240 mL) prevented bacterial adhesion to the stomach lining, achieved 94% compliance, and showed no adverse effects.

Dr. Vani Vijay emphasized the role of cranberries in supporting digestive health, while Mr. Sumit Saran noted the growing popularity and easy availability of US Cranberries in India. The findings underscore the increasing relevance of dietary interventions in managing H. pylori and reducing related gastric complications, including cancer.
