New Delhi / Sri City, Andhra Pradesh: Proterial Ltd. has announced the establishment of a new production site in India for its amorphous metal material, Metglas™, marking a significant step toward meeting the rapidly growing global demand for energy-efficient transformer solutions. With this move, Proterial will adopt a three-base production structure across the United States, Japan, and India.
Strengthening Global Manufacturing Footprint
Proterial has been a pioneer in recognizing the energy-saving potential of amorphous metal materials since the late 1970s. In 2003, then Hitachi Metals Ltd. (now Proterial) acquired the amorphous metals division of Metglas Inc. from Honeywell International Inc. in the United States, formally launching its amorphous metals business.
Mass production began in 2007 at Metglas Yasugi Works in Japan, establishing a two-site manufacturing structure between the U.S. and Japan. In March 2020, Proterial developed a new amorphous alloy, MaDC-A®, further enhancing transformer efficiency as part of its Metglas™ lineup.
Today, Proterial stands as a global leader in amorphous metal materials, handling everything from research and development to large-scale manufacturing.
Why India? Rising Power Demand and Infrastructure Growth
Electricity demand has surged worldwide due to rapid urbanization, data center expansion, and electrification trends. India, in particular, is witnessing strong growth driven by population expansion, IT sector development, and manufacturing growth.
When used as a transformer core material, Metglas™ reduces standby power usage by approximately one-third compared to conventional electromagnetic steel sheets (based on JIS C4304:2024 standards). This makes it a critical material for enhancing transformer efficiency and reducing energy losses.
Currently, Proterial supplies the Indian market through exports from Japan. However, anticipating significant growth in domestic demand, the company has decided to localize production.
New Production Site in Sri City
The new facility will be set up in Sri City, Tirupati District, Andhra Pradesh, and will primarily cater to the Indian domestic market.
The manufacturing operations will be conducted under Metglas (India) Private Limited, a newly established company.
